As we approach studying and reviewing grammar this year, we will be taking a slightly different approach than what you have experienced in years past. Most significant is that we will be studying grammar in context as much as possible. What this means is trying to see the study of grammar as the study of effective communication. It doesn't matter that you punctuate correctly because evil little English teachers somewhere decided to torture children with rules and regulations; it does matter that you are clear and effective in your writing. This is truly what the study of grammar is all about.

The other thing that will be a bit different in our study of grammar this year will be the steps we will take with each concept we study.
  • Step One : you will each individually complete an online grammar module where you will review the concept being studied and complete exercises attached to the module.
  • Step Two : you will work together in class in a small group to complete a group assessment on the concept you individually studied online. You will get feedback and have an opportunity to ask questions and seek help on the concept at this point.
  • Step Three : you will complete an individual assessment on the grammar concept to be counted for a grade.
  • Step Four : If you score in the demonstrates problems category on our individual assessment, you will need to review the module again, visit the Writing Center or help session with me, and retake your individual assessment. If you score well on our individual assessment and demonstrate understanding of the topic, you will move on to the next module.

To get started, scroll down to Grammar Module 1 below and begin. Part ONE of this module will be due on Monday, 11/7 and Parts TWO and THREE will be due on Wednesday 11/9. Good luck!
